While there are many different systems involved in a vehicle, checking out a few key things before you purchase a used car can help you to better make your decision.

* Tires- Check for weathering (cracks or sidewall wear) and tread depth. Overly worn out tires will cost you money out of pocket right away and are a huge safety risk.
* Belts- Open up the hood & look for obvious cracks and wear on any belts including the engine belt, serpentine belt, v belt.
* Fluid levels & Condition- Check the engine oil after the car has had a moment to sit, make sure there is enough oil & it has good viscosity, no grit, carbon or dirt. Engine oil is best if it is on the lighter colored side. Transmission coolant should not smell or look “burned”. Radiator fluid should be properly filled & mixed.
* Cosmetic & Body condition- Check the condition of the body & the paint. Make sure all the lights, blinkers & windows work properly. Check the trunk & gas door releases. Make sure you know where these items are.
* Maintenance Records- Even a backyard mechanic can keep receipts from the auto parts store for oil & battery. Ask to see them. As a plus, some warranties are transferable with a vehicle.
* Air Conditioning System- Are there visible leaks? Is there noise when you run the air conditioner? Is it blowing cold?
* Brakes & Suspension- Visibly look at the rotors. Does the car pull to the left or to the right? Pulling is a bad sign. Does the car stop easily? It should. The brake pedal should be firm not spongy.

With so many systems on a car or truck obviously a professional inspection is a great idea. But if you are on your own looking for a used car print the above information and I hope it helps you to make a better used car decision, and helps to save you money in the long run.

Andrew Dale King has been taking things apart and putting them back together long enough to know that if you fix it right the first time it saves a lot of money, effort, and time. A second generation union heavy equipment mechanic he currently operates a mobile mechanic service based in the Henderson & Las Vegas area when he is not working on his wife’s Mustang or fixing the things his children have broken, or his dog chews.

German luxury cars are very popular, high-end vehicles that people love to drive in style. Vehicles such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz have a fine reputation for top-notch quality and a classy look. These cars cost a fortune, it is very important to preserve the quality and longevity of German luxury vehicles using German auto parts.

All cars break down to some degree after a while, and it is imperative that the parts be replaced with the make and model of the vehicle needing repair. Many auto dealers sell a wide variety of foreign and American auto repair products, so there are many products to choose from. Many dealers charge quite a bit, so many people are looking for alternative means of buying replacement parts.

Many German auto parts are available on the Internet at a reduced price than they are sold for at a live dealership. Virtual car dealerships sell to people all over the world and have good products and competitive shipping costs. Savvy auto consumers should make sure the part meets the OEM requirements to assure accurate and safe part replacement.

Car mechanics should look for Original Equipment Manufacturer or OEM parts when repairing German-made vehicles. These types of parts are designed and packaged to meet the specific requirements of the luxury car’s make and model. OEM parts are thought to be authentic and reliable products, so many consumers search for these products.

Good maintenance involves using quality auto parts to keep the car running smoothly and efficiently. German auto products are available to repair even the most elite vehicles, including such popular brand names as Porsche and Saab. High quality products tend to last a long time, and German luxury cars are no exception because they are well engineered and built to last…

In my years in the automotive industry, I’ve learned that Subaru owners love their cars with good reason (the Subaru commercials are not lying!). Subaru’s handle well, have powerful engines, and with a few exceptions seem to last “forever.” Most Subaru’s sold in the US for from 1996 until now have been based around the 4 cylinder, 2.5L EJ25 engine in some variation.

The EJ25D was used from 1996-1999 in the Subaru Impreza (1998) Legacy/Outback (1996-1999) and the Subaru Forester). This engine was very popular – it produced a tremendous amount of power given its compact design and light weight. EJ25D’s are very fuel efficient. The upsides of this engine also caused some problems.

Dealing with Heat

The engine has a very wide bore (diameter of the cylinders) and a very short stroke (distance the pistons travel “up and down” in the cylinder). This means there is not much metal to absorb the heat the thing produces, so the cooling system must work flawlessly. Many shops report that Subaru radiators just don’t hold up well over time, and that they are too cheap to “rod out.” This means that if the radiator isn’t working properly, you’re better off getting a new radiator than working on your old one.

The head gasket is also considered problematic on the EJ25D. This engine seeps liquid out of the engine through the head gasket at times. Subaru has a chemical you can put in the engine which often times will fix the problem if it is applied early enough. If it isn’t dealt with, sufficient pressure can’t be maintained in the cooling system and the head gasket will “blow.” At that time, getting a replacement engine is a better option than having your mechanic fix the cylinder head.

EJ25D Replacement Options: Remanufactured, Rebuilt, or Used

You have a few options if your head gasket is blown on your EJ25D.

The first option you have is to buy a remanufactured cylinder head. A true remanufactured cylinder head is expensive and might not fix your problem if the block on your EJ25D is cracked. A good mechanic will “magnaflux” your block before putting the head on, but many shops don’t. If the block is cracked, you need an entirely different engine assembly. There are many different remanufacturers of cylinder heads. All good remanufacturers will magnaflux their heads to check for cracks and pressure check the head once the remanufacturing process is complete. Their process will use a seat and guide machine which produces a 3 angle seat and high quality valve seals. When the remanufacturing process is done, a remanufactured head will meet or exceed OEM standards. If you need an entire engine, a remanufactured Subaru engine is a viable option.

You could also buy a “rebuilt” head. A rebuilt head is typically, in this author’s opinion, a waste of money since the rebuild only fixes the point of failure, leaving many worn components in place. Longevity is highly questionable.

Finally, you can buy a used cylinder head or a used engine. This can be a good option if you can find an engine or head with “low miles,” since such an engine would have low wear and be “close to new.” Such an engine might not always look pretty, but it will almost always give a cost to value ratio that is very much in its favor. Tack on a lower labor cost and you’ll find that your total savings on a used Subaru engine make it very worthwhile.

Research your supplier

Whether you buy remanufactured, rebuilt, or used, there are two types of suppliers: great and horrible. Research your supplier before you buy! Check out BBB.com (the Better Business Bureau) to see how many complaints your potential supplier has, and how long they’ve been in business. If the company just opened be wary – there are many fly by night companies that open, screw enough people to get themselves in treble, close, and then open under another name. I talk to consumers everyday who tell me stories in tears that are so sad they make you want to cry with them. If the consumer would have just spent five minutes on bbb.com, they would have never thrown their money away!

Also, understand your supplier’s warranty. Many warranties require you to follow specific guidelines which are in place for your protection. If you don’t follow these guidelines you can damage the engine and void your warranty. Good suppliers will happily explain their warranty!

J. W. McBride has worked in the automotive industry for five years. He loves to save customers money by helping them find used parts. He particularly enjoys dealing with used Subaru Engines.

With Mitsubishi Eclipse Gauges, you are going to be able to know a lot of things that are going on and have a better chance at catching a problem early. However, there are a lot more benefits of having gauges that work on your vehicle. You need them to work for you if you are going to be able to have a high performing car. Some of the many benefits are:

1. Tells you what’s going on in your car – Gauges tell you when there is a problem and when your vehicle is working properly. You have them in your car for many different reasons and every driver knows that you need to know what each gauge on your car means to avoid any accident relating to the maintenance of your vehicle. With the Mitsubishi Eclipse you are going to be able to perform well without having your gauges tell you different when you take care of your car with the check-ups.

2. Help you diagnose a problem – When you have that light flash on your gauges, you are going to know that there is a problem. The gauges are going to tell you exactly where the problem is and you can fix it or take it into service to diagnose the problem correctly. You are going to be able to save yourself a lot of money when you take care of the problem quickly by looking at your gauges. You don’t need to be a mechanic to know that something is wrong with your car. With the Eclipse, you are going to seldom have a problem with your gauges, but it is always good to check on them.

3. Keeps you at bay – You don’t speed, you don’t overheat, and you check your engine when your light comes on. You are dependent on your car when you are driving and this is never a bad thing. When you are paying attention it keeps you from doing stupid things. Speed pedometer and your temperature gauge are only a few gauges that help keep your car healthy. You want to be able to fix the small problems so that you don’t run into bigger problems in the future. It makes sense that you are going to be able to have a safer driving experience in your car when you pay attention.

You are going to be able to have a lot of fun when you are paying attention to your Mitsubishi Eclipse gauges and know when and where a problem is happening on your car. When you are focused on your car, then you are going to be able to have it around for a while. It is the smart choice to make when you are going to be in the market for gauges that you get ones that you can easily read. In times of distress, you never can really focus 100% of the time and you need something that is easy to read and will allow you to get the problem fixed quickly. That is the main focus that Mitsubishi strives for.

Get all the parts you need for your Eclipse at Mitsubishi Eclipse Parts

I come from a long family line of mechanics and auto enthusiasts and they’ve learned the ins and outs of getting affordable car parts.

All you really need to buy car parts online is an Internet connection and a credit card or PayPal account. The Internet is widely used today as a mode of communication and it’s also an excellent tool to get access to more of what you need and want. In the past, it was difficult to get car parts from outside of your area. You would have to have connections or have someone to order them for you such as through a car lot, dealership or repair shop.

Today you can cut out the middle man thus reducing the middle man fees. Using the Internet also allows you to find the parts that you need even if they are not in your local area. It also opens you up to new methods of communication to help you find specific parts you might be looking for.

There are literally hundreds of car part dealers out there that you can find on the Internet. You can search for the exact parts you need according to model numbers and vehicle types. This makes it easier than ever before to find exactly the car parts you need at the click of a button.

Because you are typically ordering straight from the dealership or the manufacturer, you can get incredible savings. The savings are passed on to you when you buy direct from the source of the part.

While there are many benefits to buying car parts online, there are some cautions to be aware of, like with anything. Always be sure you know who you are buying from and that they are a reputable dealer. You also want to be sure you are aware of any warranties and return policies that may be in effect for the items that you plan to purchase.

There are some cases where you will not be able to return the parts that you purchase online for your car so always be sure you know the fine print when you make your purchase. Buying car parts online gives you more opportunity to get what you need and save a buck or two in the process. Those savings then carry on to other things you want to be spending your money on.

It comes as no surprise that most everyone wants to find the best deal for their cars at Utah auto repair shops. However, just as important as the price is finding a good mechanic. Here are a few tips for finding a good, reputable, honest car mechanic.

Find a mechanic that will quickly find out what is wrong with your car. They should be able to quickly identify what the problem is. They should also be able to provide details on what is wrong with the car, and what further problems can arise if the problem is not fixed. They should also be able to give you a time-table to tell you whether the repair is urgent or you can wait a little while to repair it.

If there is a problem with your car that comes and goes a good mechanic will try to test it out at different times during the day. If the car does not act up while in their shop they should be able to tell you warning signs to look for. They may also refer you to another mechanic who may be able to help.

Find a mechanic that gives you an upfront quote. A general estimate will be given at first, and an actual quote after they see your car and know what they are dealing with. They should provide you with a receipt so you won’t be surprised by any other hidden fees later on.

Warranties are mandatory. Find a mechanic that trusts their work and has warranties. Better yet, find a mechanic who quickly resolves any problems with issues under warranty, and at no extra charge.

Hard copies of all bills and quotes should be presented to you. Professional Utah auto repair mechanics will have everything in writing. This includes receipts, price quotes and warranties.

If you are dealing with a larger Utah auto repair dealership opt for an employee instead of a contractor. Employees have a reputation they have to keep if they do not want to lose their job. Contractors may have a conflict of interest.

Read reviews before you decide on a mechanic. Find out what people are saying about them before you take your car in. While no business is going to be perfect, stay away from mechanics and Utah auto repair shops that have more negative comments than positive ones.

Master Muffler is Utah’s leading muffler, brake and auto repair shop, and has 13 locations from Brigham City to Provo. Visit or call one of their locations for a free quote on how to improve your miles per gallon up to 30% for your car, truck or van. Visit their website at www.mastermuffler.net.

Owning a car can be an expensive job, but having a good extended car warranty for your used car can go a long way in making things more affordable. Some people think that you only need a warranty on a new car, and while that is also a good idea, it is usually the older cars that are more likely to break down. In fact, most people never even get to use their warranty on their brand new car, so while it does offer peace of mind, it can also be a waste of money.

Any used car that that breaks down a lot can become more of a liability to you and your financial future. With an old junker you can spend more on repairs every month than you would on a car payment for a brand new vehicle. If you are reading this you are probably already interested in an extended auto warranty of some kind so let’s look at some things you should look for in your search.

There are some companies that offer 0% financing. Keep in mind that even 5% financing may seem small, but with costly repairs this can add up fast, so if you can get a 0% warranty consider yourself lucky. One thing I always look for is that road side assistance and towing is included. Your used car or truck will probably not break down right at a mechanic’s shop or your own driveway. Chances are you will be driving somewhere and tow trucks can cost a pretty penny.

Sometimes you can get lock-out assistance as well, and you never know when that will come in handy. Another thing to look for is free car rental with any repairs. Sometimes your automobile will have to be in the shop for a few days and 3 days worth of car rental can cost a lot of money. A good extended warranty company will pay for all of this as well.

Also make sure that the company has a good claims record. All the best coverage in the world will mean nothing if they will not follow through on it and you end up having to pay for all the repairs yourself. Want to get the best deal and coverage? Check out where I got the best extended car warranty and saved about 60%. You can also find great deals and advice on specific brands of cars like the Infiniti extended warranty.

There are many parts of the car which can be replaced to make your car run stronger and faster. This is true no matter what the manufacturer. Simply pulling one part and dropping in another will alter the amount of power or gain which is achieved by the engine. Many people looking to enhance the performance of their vehicle will run into a wall unless they take the time to update the software which is being used by their car. This means altering the engine computer software which is being used to regulate the many different functions the vehicle performs.

Like it or not the vehicles of today are far more advanced in every way. Functions do not happen simply by mechanical means. There are computers on board which control everything from air flow to the amount of gas which is being used. Having the right balance will make it where the engine can run as efficiently as possible.

If your vehicle has not been to the dealership in the past 2-5 years, or your current repair shop has not offered to check your vehicle for a software update, then you have about an 80% chance of requiring an update. Ask this simple question the next time you see your mechanic, “does your shop have the ability to update my vehicles software if needed?” If they have the famous deer in the headlights look on their face and say no, then you may need to look elsewhere for a repair shop with current training and up to date tools required to properly service your vehicle and keep you safe.

I know a lot of technicians and repair shops that have never performed an update, stating “all that does is mess up the computer, and causes future problems”. They could not be further from the truth. The manufacturers would not spend time and money on correcting their faulty software if they did not need to. With parts becoming more reliable, and vehicles designed to be virtually maintenance free of tune ups until 90,000 miles, we are seeing the need of parts replacement declining as fast as software updates rise.

Recently there were customer complaints of their rear brakes locking up during certain stops, causing loss of vehicle control, which could result in a crash without warning. The vehicle manufacturer inspected the entire braking system, paying special attention to the rear brakes, and found no reason for the brakes to fail. They eventually found the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) computer on about 50,600 vehicles with software programmed to lock up the rear brakes during certain stops. The “Fix” for the Recall consisted of a software update; no special or replacement parts were needed.

As you can see, even cars which are not being enhanced to get more performance are in need of software updates to correct faulty programming. Correcting safety concerns is likely the most important reason to have your vehicle checked for updates. Other issues fixed by software updates may include repairs to the check engine light, transmissions, alternators, and even belt “chirp” noises.

While a person works under the car, or any automobile for that matter, the most important thing is the safety- of the man and the automobile, equally. Considering this need for safety, there are a number of repair tools designed and are easily available in the market. Still it becomes a source of great bewilderment to know that people fall prey to accidents and injuries while working under the cars. The reason most of the times, is the wrong use of the tools or no use at all. One such instance which I would like to talk about is the top jack stands.

People and specially the mechanics say that they are very cumbersome to work with. The hydraulic stands are most of the times sought as a refuge. The hydraulic stands do help and work as a replacement of the top jack stands, but the susceptibility to accidents is not reduced. There are many cases when the auto mobile slips of the stands and thuds on the ground. In cases like this not only the person who works under it gets hurt, but also the automobile gets hurt due to the fall. If in a situation like this, the jack stand is used along with the hydraulics, then the sudden fall can certainly be averted.

The car would not fall on the ground even if it slips off the jack. This is case when the people are not at all inclined to work with the top jack stands. Then there are cases where only partial use is seen. This ‘partial’ use is all the more scary. Most of the people think that is great achievement to balance the whole automobile on just one jack placed in the centre of the car. This is very scary situation, as they are not designed for that use. There are huge chances that the jack would slide off, or there would be am imbalance with a little jerk to the automobile. The best way of using the car jacks is to place one at each place and secure the whole automobile on it well. Once satisfied with the position of the car, you can take your positions for work. Safety at workplace is very important!

Posted by Cherry, you can find more information about jack stands and lincoln welders on site toolfetch.com.

No one likes getting into accidents. Besides the obvious fact that accidents are frightening and dangerous in themselves, getting your car fixed after an accident can be a huge hassle. Finding a good auto service is harder than it seems.

So, what should you keep in mind when looking for a good auto service in San Francisco? Here are some tips:

1. Time

Time is precious. Before anything else, ask a prospective auto service how long it will take them to repair your car. Try to find one that’ll have your car fixed in a day or two.

2. ASE State Certified

It would also be good to look for a repair shop that hires only ASE State Certified mechanics. This way, you can be sure that your car is in good hands and that they’ll get the repairs done right – the first time.

3. No unnecessary repairs

Also make sure that they don’t try to get you to pay for additional repairs your car doesn’t really need. A lot of shops will try to add costs to your bill, so be very wary. Look for a shop that’s honest and will only fix what is broken.

4. Warranties

Finally, check if the shop gives warranties. A 24 month/ 24,000 mile warranty would be good. These four tips will help you find a good auto shop in San Francisco. Remember the key here is to do your research, collect information and prospective shops and select the best. Good luck!
